My Journey from Detroit to Luxury Brand Outfits…

Editor’s Note:

Fashion has always been deeply personal to me.

Behind every outfit I curate is a lifetime of experiences that began long before Luxury Brand Outfits ever existed.

Every once in a while, I’d like to step away from product recommendations and outfit inspiration to share a few of those stories.

This is one of them.

Before Fashion Ever Found Me

I’m about to take you on a personal journey back to my humble beginnings.

So here’s your cue…

You can click somewhere else, or you can stick around for the story.

I hope you stick around.

(Smilin’.)

In the world of fashion, a personal style journey is much more than a collection of clothing choices.

It’s a reflection of growth.

It’s shaped by the people who influence us, the places we come from, the experiences we never forget, and eventually, the person we become.

Hi, I’m Brian, lead fashion curator at Luxury Brand Outfits.

I’m originally from Detroit, Michigan, and I’d like to take you through the fascinating journey that shaped the way I see fashion today.

Before we go any further, let me say this.

I’m not sharing this story to impress anyone.

I’m sharing it to impress upon you that anything you truly dedicate yourself to in life is possible.

If this story accomplishes anything, I hope it shows that passion has a way of revealing itself over time.

Sometimes it starts with something as simple as wanting to fit in.

Other times…

It quietly becomes your life’s work.

Chapter One

When Everything Changed

My story begins in junior high school in Detroit.

Looking back now, I didn’t realize it then, but that’s where everything started.

Up until that point, my school experience had been completely different.

I had just left Catholic school, where we wore uniforms every day.

Fashion wasn’t part of the conversation because, quite honestly, we all looked the same.

Then I walked into junior high.

Instantly, I realized this new educational journey was going to be worlds different from grades one through six.

The culture was night and day.

The one thing that immediately stood out to me wasn’t the classrooms.

It wasn’t the teachers.

It wasn’t even the building.

It was how everybody dressed.

Those kids took fashion seriously.

Almost like it was a religion.

Me?

I was just trying to fit in.

Looking back, that’s probably the most important part of this story.

I was only twelve years old.

Detroit has always been known as a fashion mecca, although I didn’t fully appreciate that at the time.

I was simply trying to survive junior high and the fashion demands of my neighborhood.

Specifically, my own block.

Then I started paying attention.

I noticed the way the girls looked at the guys.

I noticed who seemed confident.

I noticed who stood out without saying a word.

For obvious reasons, none of this happened back in Catholic school, where everyone wore uniforms.

This was all new territory for me.

And if I’m being honest…

It intimidated me.

I knew I wasn’t dressing on the same level as some of the other guys.

But deep down inside, I had a plan.

At least I thought I did.

I just didn’t know yet that this was the beginning of a journey that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

Chapter Two

My Mother’s Unexpected Influence

Funny how life works.

Sometimes the people who influence us the most have absolutely no idea they’re doing it.

That was my mother.

She was an English teacher at my school.

More importantly…

She, along with my dad and 2 older brothers, was always well-dressed.

Always.

Every outfit seemed intentional.

Every ensemble looked complete.

At the time, I don’t think she realized she was quietly teaching me about presentation long before anyone ever called it personal style.

Bless her heart.

She had no idea that enrolling me in that school was creating a future fashion curator.

Around that same time, designer jeans were becoming everything.

Yes…

I’m dating myself.

But it is what it is.

Mannn…

The girls wore Calvin Klein.

Jordache.

Bon Jour.

Sasson.

Every single day, they seemed put together.

They paired those jeans with dope sweaters and leather jackets, crisp Polo Oxford shirts, Adidas Top Ten sneakers, Patent leather Converse, etc.

I remember standing back and just observing.

Watching.

Learning.

If I’m honest, I was intimidated.

Not because of the clothes themselves…

But because I knew I wasn’t dressing at the level I wanted to.

I’ve always been a sponge.

Once I realized fashion mattered, I immediately started paying attention to which stores I needed to visit whenever we went to the mall.

My mother?

She could’ve cared less about all of that.

She wanted me focused on my studies.

So naturally…

I tried to negotiate.

I’d jokingly tell her,

“I’ll trade good grades for trendy outfits.”

Of course…

That didn’t work.

But hey…

I was twelve or thirteen years old.

I had to try.

The pressure to succeed academically was steady, consistent, and sometimes downright unforgiving.

Eventually, I made myself a promise.

If I wanted those clothes…

I’d earn them.

So I worked.

Hard.

To my surprise—and honestly, to my mother’s surprise too—I started making grades I had never made before.

Honor roll status. Something clicked.

One day she took me to the mall.

She smiled and said,

“Pick out a few outfits.”

I’ll never forget that day.

Looking back…

That was probably the first time fashion stopped being something I admired from a distance and became something I could actually participate in.

My own little “Dapper Dan” history had begun.

And before I knew it…

I became him.

Junior high had become one of the most memorable seasons of my life.

But an even bigger challenge was waiting just around the corner.

High school.

Chapter Three

The Closet That Changed My Life

Every now and then, something happens in your life that doesn’t seem important at the time.

Years later…

You look back and realize it changed everything.

For me, it wasn’t a fashion show.

It wasn’t a designer store.

It wasn’t even an expensive outfit.

It was a closet.

Now, let me explain.

By the time I entered high school, another challenge was waiting for me.

I had enrolled at Cass Technical High School.

For those who may not be familiar with it, Cass Tech wasn’t just one of Detroit’s most respected schools—it was one of the most academically successful schools in the entire state of Michigan.

Needless to say…

The students there had their own culture.

And that included fashion.

The first thing I noticed?

They dressed preppy.

Now remember…

The neighborhood I came from didn’t dress like that at all.

I had absolutely no clue what “preppy” really meant.

Back home, our style leaned in a completely different direction.

Leather jackets.

Starter jackets.

Silk shirts.

Suede boots.

Nike.

Adidas.

Everybody wanted to look as clean, as sharp, and yes…

As gangsta as we could imagine.

Then I walked into Cass Tech.

Penny loafers.

Oxford shirts.

Sweaters tied around shoulders.

Pressed khakis.

Everything looked polished.

For the second time in my life…

Fashion challenged me.

Only this time, I wasn’t intimidated.

I was curious.

Instead of choosing one style over the other, I started asking myself a different question.

“Why can’t I have both?”

That simple question changed everything.

My Own Fashion Laboratory

Around this same time, something else was happening inside our house.

My mom had a subscription to Spiegel magazine.

My dad had one for GQ.

If you’re old enough to remember those magazines, you already know what I’m talking about.

If you’re not…

Let me paint the picture.

These weren’t magazines you casually flipped through and tossed aside.

These things were events.

Every issue was packed with beautifully coordinated outfits, timeless menswear, luxury brands, and photography that made you stop and stare.

I’d spend hours studying those pages.

Not just looking…

Studying.

The way the shirts were layered.

The color combinations.

The watches.

The shoes.

The belts.

Even the way the models stood fascinated me.

There was something about those photographs that spoke to me.

Eventually…

I started cutting out my favorite pages.

Not to collect them.

To learn from them.

The Closet Upstairs

Upstairs in the house where I grew up was a closet unlike any other.

To this day, I still remember it.

From the outside…

It looked completely ordinary.

Nothing special.

But when you opened the door…

Everything changed.

The inside was finished in this beautiful dark lacquered wood.

It almost looked luxurious.

As if it belonged inside some upscale boutique instead of an ordinary house.

I claimed that closet.

Little by little, I covered the inside walls with the fashion pages I had carefully cut out from Spiegel and GQ.

Polo Ralph Lauren.

Izod Lacoste.

Calvin Klein.

Guess.

Designer suits.

Luxury sportswear.

Anything that inspired me found a place on those walls.

Looking back now…

I unknowingly built my very first mood board.

Long before Pinterest.

Long before Instagram.

Long before people created digital inspiration folders.

That closet became mine.

Sometimes I’d just stand there looking at those pages.

Dreaming.

Imagining.

Studying.

Learning.

Eventually, I started hanging my own designer clothes inside that same closet.

There weren’t many.

But to me…

They were everything.

Matter of fact…

I think I kept that closet cleaner than I kept my own bedroom.

Funny how priorities work when you’re young.

Looking back now, I realize something.

Luxury Brand Outfits didn’t begin with a website.

It didn’t begin with affiliate marketing.

It didn’t begin with AI.

It began inside that little closet.

That’s where I first fell in love with the art of putting clothes together.

Creating My Own Lane

The more I learned, the more I realized something.

I didn’t want to copy anyone.

I wanted to become a combination of everything that inspired me.

So I started blending the preppy influence of Cass Tech with the street style I had grown up around.

I’d wear Polo Ralph Lauren Oxford shirts with leather jackets.

Slim-fit jeans.

Adidas sneakers.

Pieces that, on paper, probably shouldn’t have worked together.

Somehow…

They did.

Because they felt like me.

One trend I honestly tried to embrace was penny loafers.

Everybody wore them.

I gave them an honest shot.

But…

They just weren’t me.

I couldn’t stay with them for long.

I respected the style.

I just couldn’t abandon the style that raised me.

Eventually, after one year, I left Cass Tech and returned to public school to finish high school.

That’s a story for another day.

😂

But before I left, Cass Tech had already given me something priceless.

Perspective.

It taught me there isn’t just one way to dress well.

Great style isn’t about choosing sides.

It’s about knowing yourself well enough to create your own lane.

That lesson has stayed with me ever since.

Chapter Four

The Day I Finally Became Myself

If junior high taught me to observe…

And high school taught me to adapt…

College taught me something even more important.

It taught me to stop chasing everyone else’s style and finally embrace my own.

Walking onto campus felt different from anything I had experienced before.

For the first time, there wasn’t one dominant style everyone was trying to follow.

People came from different cities.

Different neighborhoods.

Different backgrounds.

Everybody brought a little piece of home with them.

And so did I.

This time, I wasn’t interested in fitting in.

I had already done that.

Now I wanted to stand out.

Not for attention.

Just because I had finally figured out who I was.

I always wanted to be as different from the crowd as I could.

Even the guys from my hometown of Detroit…

I felt they couldn’t compete with me.

Now, before anybody raises an eyebrow…

That wasn’t arrogance.

That was confidence.

There comes a point in life when preparation quietly turns into belief.

I had spent years studying fashion.

Watching people.

Cutting magazine pages.

Learning colors.

Experimenting with combinations.

Now it was time to trust my own eye.

The White Tracksuit

There are certain outfits you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Not because they were expensive.

Not because they were trendy.

Because of how they made you feel.

Mine was a white Sergio Tacchini tracksuit.

Crisp.

Clean.

Fresh from head to toe.

I paired it with white-on-white Diadora sneakers.

When I walked across campus that day…

I wasn’t trying to make a statement.

I was simply wearing what felt like me.

But something unexpected happened.

I still laugh when I think about it.

I was standing out on the plaza where everyone liked to gather between classes when two young ladies walked over to me.

They smiled and asked,

“Where are you from?”

I answered,

“Detroit.”

Then I asked them something.

“Why did you ask me that?”

Without missing a beat, one of them smiled and said,

“We just knew.”

I don’t know why…

But that conversation has stayed with me all these years.

Maybe because, in that moment, I realized something.

Detroit style wasn’t just about clothes.

It had an attitude.

A confidence.

A way of carrying yourself.

People recognized it before I ever had to say a word.

I honestly didn’t expect that much attention from one tracksuit.

But I can tell you this…

I felt like a rock star that day.

From that moment forward, I knew one thing.

I had to keep my foot on the pedal.

Finding My Own Signature

One thing I’ve always admired about Detroit is this.

People don’t wait for permission to be themselves.

Everybody kind of does their own thing.

Now…

That doesn’t mean I agreed with every style I saw.

Far from it.

But I respected it.

Because it came from authenticity.

When somebody from Detroit develops their own look…

They stay in that lane.

They’re not constantly changing to fit whatever happens to be popular that week.

That mindset rubbed off on me.

It taught me that fashion isn’t about chasing attention.

It’s about becoming recognizable because you’ve stayed true to yourself.

Looking back, I think that’s one of the greatest lessons Detroit ever gave me.

When Fashion Opened Another Door

Just when I thought I had discovered everything fashion had to teach me…

Life surprised me again.

There were tryouts for the campus modeling squad.

Honestly…

Modeling wasn’t even on my radar.

Then one day, a close friend named Daphne approached me.

“You ought to try out.”

I laughed.

She didn’t.

She kept encouraging me until finally I decided,

“Why not?”

So I auditioned.

And I made the squad.

Little did I know…

Fashion was about to introduce itself to me from an entirely different perspective.

My First Lesson Behind the Curtain

Most people see a fashion show and think about the lights.

The music.

The clothes.

The runway.

What they don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes.

That’s where I really began learning.

The organization had someone responsible for selecting the clothing for every model.

Makes sense, right?

Well…

By now, you’ve probably figured out something about me.

I’ve always been extremely meticulous when it comes to selecting clothes.

Let’s just say…

I wasn’t making that person’s job very easy.

Out of everybody involved…

I was probably the one giving him the most resistance.

Before my first show, I looked at the outfit he picked out for me.

I just wasn’t feeling it.

Not at all.

Now, I wasn’t trying to be difficult.

I simply believed the clothing should represent the person wearing it.

So I scheduled a meeting with the woman who directed the modeling team.

We talked.

We compromised.

It was a little shaky at first.

But we worked it out.

Eventually, she allowed me to accompany the buyer when we selected my outfits.

Looking back…

That may have been the first time someone outside my family trusted my eye for fashion.

At the time, I didn’t realize how much that confidence would shape my future.

Sometimes people don’t change your life by giving you opportunities.

Sometimes they change your life by believing you’re capable of more than you believe yourself.

Chapter Five

When the Lights Came On

Funny how life works.

Sometimes you spend years preparing for a moment…

…without realizing that’s what you’ve been doing.

When I joined the campus modeling squad, I thought I was simply trying something new.

I had no idea I was about to experience one of the most unforgettable moments of my life.

Everything about modeling fascinated me.

Not just walking the runway.

Everything.

How outfits were selected.

How colors worked together.

How different fabrics created completely different impressions under stage lighting.

How one small accessory could completely change an outfit.

It was an entirely different education.

And I was loving every minute of it.

There was only one problem.

By now, you probably know me well enough to guess what it was.

I had opinions.

Lots of them.

Especially when it came to clothes.

The gentleman I mentioned earlier, who was responsible for selecting our wardrobe, probably wondered why this one college kid questioned everything.

Truth be told…

I wasn’t trying to be difficult.

I just cared.

Deeply.

Before my very first show, I looked at the outfit he selected for me. Now, respectfully, we had just gone down this road before. So I trusted him and didn’t accompany him this time.

So he comes back with my outfit, and something inside me immediately said,

“This isn’t it.”

I couldn’t explain it.

I simply knew it didn’t represent me. Again!

So I met with the director of our modeling organization one more time.

We talked.

We listened to one another.

Eventually, we found common ground.

The compromise was simple.

I would always accompany the buyer when he selected my wardrobe.

Looking back…

That wasn’t just a compromise.

It was trust.

Someone had looked at this young man from Detroit and decided,

“Maybe he sees something the rest of us don’t.”

That confidence meant more than they probably ever realized.

Showtime

Then came opening night.

I can still see it.

The auditorium.

The excitement backstage.

Everyone is making last-minute adjustments.

The music is waiting to begin.

My heart was beating faster than I wanted to admit.

The director gave me my instructions.

She wanted me to open the show.

Not halfway through.

Not somewhere in the middle.

The very first model.

The stage was completely dark.

I was told to lean against a prop and wait.

That’s all.

Just wait.

The music started.

Then…

The lights came on.

I’ll never forget what happened next.

The audience exploded.

I mean…

Absolutely exploded.

For a second, I honestly didn’t know what was happening.

I wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction.

Not even close.

The noise kept getting louder.

The cheering became so overwhelming that the principal actually stopped the fashion show.

Right in the middle of it.

He addressed the students and warned them that anyone who continued disrupting the program would be removed from the auditorium.

To this day…

I still laugh thinking about it.

Who would’ve imagined that a fashion show would need crowd control?

Certainly not me.

Once things settled down, the show continued.

I walked.

Posed.

Smiled.

Finished my part.

But something had changed.

When I walked off that stage…

I wasn’t the same young man who had walked onto it.

Something inside me had grown.

Not my ego.

My confidence.

There’s a difference.

A Door I Never Expected

As the shows continued, something else happened.

One evening, after another performance, a gentleman approached me.

He owned a clothing store at one of the local shopping malls.

He introduced himself and asked a question I’ll never forget.

“Have you ever considered modeling professionally?”

I didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely,” I answered.

Before I knew it, I was training alongside experienced local models who had already built names for themselves.

Men and women, well into their late 20s and 30s.

Everything became more serious.

The expectations.

The discipline.

The professionalism.

Sometimes I would return to campus late, trying to figure out how I was going to squeeze homework into the rest of the evening.

It wasn’t always easy.

But I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything.

Because this was where my education truly expanded.

Learning to See Color

Most people assume modeling taught me how to walk.

It did.

But that’s not what stayed with me.

What stayed with me was learning how outfits are built.

Why certain colors belong together.

Why don’t others?

How textures can either compete with one another or quietly complement each other.

Why proportion matters.

Why balance matters.

I became fascinated by the details.

Not because someone told me to.

Because I genuinely loved it.

Without realizing it, I had begun developing an eye for coordination.

The more I learned, the more obsessed I became.

I wasn’t simply wearing clothes anymore.

I was studying them.

Breaking them apart mentally.

Putting them back together in different ways.

Looking for combinations other people overlooked.

That curiosity never left me.

Matter of fact…

It’s still with me today.

Every outfit I curate.

Every color combination I recommend.

Every collection I build.

A little piece of that young college student still shows up.

He’s still asking the same question.

“What if we paired this with that instead?”

Funny…

I guess some passions never really leave us.

They simply grow up alongside us.

Chapter Six

When Passion Became Purpose

Eventually, college became a memory.

The runway lights faded.

The modeling shows came to an end.

Life, as it always does, moved forward.

Like everyone else, I entered the working world.

Careers.

Responsibilities.

Bills.

Schedules.

Meetings.

Deadlines.

From the outside, life looked pretty ordinary.

But there was one thing that never changed.

Fashion.

No matter where I worked…

No matter what position I held…

I still loved putting outfits together.

Matter of fact…

I probably became even more obsessed.

I won’t bore you with every stop along my professional journey.

Let’s just say…

I killed it, y’all.

I really killed it.

Friends.

Coworkers.

Complete strangers.

Someone always had something to say about how coordinated my outfits were.

And honestly…

That made me smile.

Not because I wanted attention.

But because people were noticing something I had quietly been practicing since I was twelve years old.

The Night Before

One of my favorite parts of every workday actually happened the night before.

I’d get home.

Work out.

Eat dinner.

Then the fun began.

I’d spend the rest of the evening putting together tomorrow’s outfit.

Not just the shirt and pants.

Everything.

The shoes.

The belt.

The watch.

The bracelet.

The necklace.

The ring.

If one color was even slightly off…

It bothered me.

Sometimes I’d lay everything across my bed.

Other nights, I’d hang the complete outfit on my closet door so I could step back and study it.

Then I’d take a picture.

Not because social media existed.

Not because I wanted likes.

I’d send it to a friend.

Mostly for laughs.

Looking back…

I realize I wasn’t simply picking out clothes.

I was curating complete experiences.

Long before I knew the word “curator,” that’s exactly what I was becoming.

Sometimes I’d realize one piece was missing.

Maybe it was the perfect bracelet.

Maybe a pair of shoes.

Maybe a shirt that tied everything together.

What did I do?

I’d jump in my car and head to the mall.

Just to find that one missing piece.

Now tell me that isn’t just a little bit crazy.

Go ahead…

I’ll wait.

(Laughing.)

But that’s me.

That’s Brian.

Raw.

Uncut.

Completely obsessed with color, balance, and putting together outfits that simply feel right.

And honestly…

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Looking Back

Every chapter of my life taught me something.

Junior high taught me to observe.

My mother taught me that opportunities are earned.

Cass Tech taught me that different styles can coexist beautifully.

That little closet upstairs taught me to dream.

College taught me confidence.

Modeling taught me discipline.

The working world taught me consistency.

Looking back now…

I don’t think any of those experiences happened by accident.

Each one quietly prepared me for what I do today.

When people visit Luxury Brand Outfits, they see carefully coordinated outfits.

They see luxury brands.

Designer pieces.

Beautiful combinations.

What they don’t see…

Is the little boy who stood quietly watching everyone else in junior high, wondering why some people seemed to carry themselves differently.

They don’t see the teenager cutting pages out of Spiegel and GQ magazines and covering the walls of a little closet with dreams.

They don’t see the young man from Detroit learning that confidence can sometimes speak louder than words.

But I see him.

Every. Single. Day.

He’s still here.

He’s just older now.

Why Luxury Brand Outfits Exist

People sometimes ask me why I spend so much time coordinating outfits.

Why I pay attention to details that others might overlook.

Why I can spend an hour deciding which watch looks better with one particular jacket?

The answer is actually pretty simple.

Because I love it.

Always have.

Always will.

Luxury Brand Outfits wasn’t created because I wanted to recommend clothes.

It was created because I’ve spent most of my life studying style.

Observing it.

Appreciating it.

Living it.

Now I simply have the privilege of sharing that passion with people all over the world.

Every outfit I curate carries a little piece of my journey.

Every recommendation reflects decades of learning.

Every collection is built with the same excitement I felt standing in front of that closet upstairs, dreaming about one day understanding fashion a little better.

Funny how life works.

Sometimes the things that seem ordinary while you’re living them become extraordinary when you look back.

A Letter to the Twelve-Year-Old Me

If I could go back and say one thing to that nervous twelve-year-old kid walking into junior high for the first time…

I’d probably smile before saying a word.

Then I’d tell him this.

Don’t worry so much about fitting in.

One day, the thing you’re worried about today will become one of your greatest strengths.

Keep watching.

Keep learning.

Keep dreaming.

Don’t be afraid to be different.

Don’t apologize for caring about the details.

And never lose that excitement you feel every time you discover an outfit that just works.

One day…

People will come to you because of that passion.

They’ll trust your eye.

They’ll appreciate your perspective.

They’ll see the years you invested, even if they never know the entire story behind them.

And when that day comes…

Remember where it all started.

Remember Detroit.

Remember your mother.

Remember that little closet upstairs.

Remember every lesson.

Because none of it was wasted.

It was all preparing you for this.

Until Next Time…

If you’ve stayed with me this long…

Thank you.

Seriously.

It means more than you know.

This wasn’t just another fashion article.

This was my story.

The story behind the outfits.

The story behind the colors.

The story behind the curator.

Maybe now you understand why I get so excited when I discover a perfectly coordinated look.

Maybe now you know why I believe fashion is so much more than fabric and labels.

Fashion has always been about people.

About confidence.

About memories.

About self-expression.

And for me…

It has always been about gratitude.

Gratitude for every lesson.

Every opportunity.

Every challenge.

Every chapter.

Because together…

They made me who I am today.

Looking back now, I smile when I think about that twelve-year-old kid who walked into junior high simply trying to fit in.

He had no idea that decades later he’d still be studying colors, textures, silhouettes, and combinations—only now he’d be helping people discover their own style.

Funny how life works.

Sometimes the very thing that intimidates you becomes the very thing you’re called to do.

Fashion didn’t just find me.

It had been patiently waiting for me all along.

~ Ciao for now.
